Students are presented with a problem and work in small groups to find a strategies to solve it. They use manipulatives, such as counters, fraction tiles, graph paper, number lines, charts or calculators to find a solution. By discussing each groups strategy and outcome, students notice more efficient methods or methods that may not have worked. The teacher notices which students may need a review of a concept or reteaching of misconceptions, and plans her lessons accordingly.
